Is English your native language? 'To believe in something' means that you believe it exists, not whether or not other people share the belief. I don't believe in QAnon, which is a quasi-religion that posits that the US government is controlled by child molesting Satanists and that Trump and his madhi-esque agent, Q, are working behind the scenes to expose and destroy them. I don't think Q exists, and I think the 4chan posts claiming to be from 'QAnon' that started the whole thing were fraudulent, and that Q is a fictional character. The only belief I share with the QAnoners is the belief that politicians are controlled through blackmail, though I am sure the methods and motivations are far more mundane and bland than the QAnoners imagine.

Mmm...colloquially, to say you believe in something is to say you believe in what that thing stands for. To say you believe in Christianity connotes that you're a Christian. In practice 'I believe in Christianity' is a very different statement from 'I believe Christians exist'. The confusion is honest and doesnt' require lack of familiarity with English.
