I have strong empathy but I work in medicine and have to take a big mental step backwards when typing some reports. It's fun to get emotionally involved when someone is doing really well and you can hear the excitement in the doctor's voice. When someone's dealing with end-stage disease and the possibilities are running out, though, the empathy is overlaid with fatalism and I'm almost in a dissociated state, typing "from a distance."
