Prof. Eric Cline Lecturing About 1177 BC

RE: Prof. Eric Cline Lecturing About 1177 BC
To be serious for just a moment, for most of human history travel by sea was preferable to travel over land.  The notion that populations would take to the sea to move is not all that surprising.  All you need are some boats.   And as was customary then people would sail along the coasts.  Attacking targets of opportunity if they presented themselves makes as much sense as anything else.  There is diplomatic correspondence reporting "enemy ships" attacking Cyprus without identifying the attackers.  They could have been anyone including displaced populations  from Western Asia Minor who were originally reacting to conditions which made their lives intolerable AND/OR people who got sick and tired of the oppression of the palace culture which was pervasive in the LBA.   Cline's idea of a systems collapse putting together a firestorm of angry people on the move as a result of a combo of famine, earthquake and war is reasonable but he doesn't know if the Sea People were a cause or an effect.  He has evidence of all three calamities occuring at different places and times but which one started the avalanche is any one's guess.  Even Cline does not know.  The evidence for widespread drought is compelling at the right time in history but Cline makes the observation that civilizations can survive a famine.  While true, there are examples where famine was enough on its own.

It is one of the great mysteries of history.
