Evil people will always be evil with or without religion. Good people will be good with or without religion. People will always find an excuse to be evil, if they want to live an evil life. I dont think we can really blame it all on religion.
But as the tired, and in this case relevant saying goes "it takes religion to make a good person do evil things". There is no doubt in my mind that without religion the world would be a less violent and evil place. People use religion as a justification for their actions, if they didn't have the word of god as they see it telling them things they do are ok, they wouldn't. It's simple as that. Of course there would always be evil even without religion, but there would be a hell of a lot less.
