The issue is isn't stupidity though. The issue is how well founded the ancient theists' conclusions were. Were they justified in believing the things they believed?

Whoa there, L. Ron, you are positing quite a few unfounded claims here already. What evidence do you have for any of this? Do you have even a rudimentary theory for how "souls" might be transported? If not, then your claims have no foundation in any reality, even a hypothetical one.
You are thinking critically about what the world's religions have given us. That's step one. Step two is applying the same amount of critical scrutiny to your own hypotheses. If you think souls have been transported on asteroids, ask yourself: "What reasons do I have for believing this?"
You've made a number of claims about souls in your OP but you haven't given us any reasons to believe any of it. In fact, most of us here (myself included) find the evidence for disembodied souls existing in the first place pretty slim.
