Oh my Thor, how would I know, I was only married to a Japanese woman. Trust me, they don't pronounce "Japan" "Japan" that is a western pronunciation. The name for Japan as you said is "Nippon" or "Nihon". "Japan" is a western mispronunciation.
No, ‘Japan’ is a Western name.
If you say to a Japanese, ‘Say “Japan”,’ you’ll hear ‘Japan’. If you ask them the name of their country, you’ll hear ‘Nippon’.
