Funny. I was a huge fan of adding the 2 point conversion to the pro game for two reasons. One, this rule already existed in the high school and college game as far back as I can remember. The AFL also used the 2 point conversion for its entire 10 year existence before it merged with the NFL. So, for most people, the 2 point conversion just seemed like an obvious thing to do and the NFL was just being the No Fun League for not instituting it for so many years. Two, it's more difficult to score a touchdown even from the 2 yard line than it is to kick it through the uprights from the 15 yard line. And it's way more exciting to watch, too.
There are a couple of other ways to use a kick to get points but they are pretty obscure and seldom used so most casual fans don't even know about them.
Wanna know my two biggest problems with football rules? Holding and pass interference. Both are too subjective and inconsistent and need serious reform.
I have never liked the 2 point option in football. I always felt like it was cheating. But life is life, and humans do what they do, so you learn to live with it.
But just like the 3 point bucket rule in the NBA was not original, I do think it matters that you can hit that bullseye from a further distance.
As far as holding and pass interference I don't have a current problem with them (meaning current rules), although I would agree it can be sketchy. Been watching football since I was a kid, so I get it. In a game of inches and literally nanoseconds, combined with position, any call can be marginal.
Pro sports is a product. I think long term, the goal of any ref isn't just about the rules, but also about viewership. If a bad call costs viewers, they don't like it. If a bad call brings them viewers, they like it. But in all seriousness, I don't think professional refs of any sport want to be the center of controversy.
I can't tell you how many stories in my almost 55 years, next month, I have heard about stories of multiple sports where some ref, football, soccer, hockey, tennis ect ect has been threatened.
I chalk it up to human tribalism. If we are used to something, we defend it, even if we are wrong.
I think anyone under current rules, and even in my lifetime can get behind calling "Pass interference" when the defender clearly isn't looking at the ball and knocks the receiver on their ass, some things are "No brainers'. But can one make an argument about mutual hand slaps in the process of the play? Yes.
