Color me ignorant, but if Hitler was not a practicing Catholic (in his adulthood at least), why would the Catholic Church needed to excommunicate him?
So that the nation's Catholics would not support him. It would have also shown solidarity with the jews against whom Germany's latest pogrom was in progress. But, unfortunately, Pope Pius XII had little use for the Jews.
