When people's religious views are hateful they deserve the hate, no kid gloves. They're free to believe it, and I'm free to call them an asshole for it. Two way street.
The difference in my being a dick and their being an asshole is simple. I'm a dick because I'm a big meanie that doesn't feel that "belief" = "free reign to spout viscious bullshit without people calling you an asshole", they an asshole because they argue for blood magic, scapegoating, and human sacrifice as virtue. GG.
I too have my dick moments. But the mere fact that someone believes in a god or atonement surely cannot make them an asshole. It is what they do about it that makes them worthy of scorn. Those who want to slam gays or make my kid pray at school or make the science curriculum more bible-friendly or tell me why I should believe what they believe deserve both barrels. But the mere fact they they believe what I find no reason to believe hardly makes them an asshole. While young-earth Christians are demonstably stupid and probably should not be entrusted with the care of children, there are Christians who are able to embrace science, discuss the bible rationally as a work of literature and accept they have no more rational basis for accepting their religious beliefs than you do for dismissing them. No one owes any one else a justification for their beliefs.
