I don't see why it's not considered a hate crime now. When I was a christian I went to my neice's baby dedication as her godmother. The pastor told my sister, "No matter how cute she is, remember she's still a sinner."
The very nature of christianity or any evangelical religion makes it impossible for them to truly respect other people's right to freedom of belief. That's a basic constitutional right. But they have to believe anyone who doesn't belieie what they believe is going to hell. How can they respect that?
There a few delightful exceptions (though not nearly enough to counter the inherent bigotry). When I was at Catholic school, one of the priests caused a minor kerfuffle when he told us, 'As good Catholics, we are all required to believe in Hell. But only a fool would believe that there's anyone there.'
