I think it's because the church has changed over the centuries that what is now considered unacceptable was accepted before. The methods of granting sainthood are taken seriously enough, it's only that humanity is imperfect.

Those damned moral absolutes just go on changing!


On a lighter note, I'm pretty sure the Catholic Church has done lots of things that they knew at the time weren't all that hot.

You think when priests fucked little boys that they didn't know wtf they were doing, and that it was wrong?

Burning people at the stake? You don't think anyone thought "Hey, maybe this isn't the best way to go about this?"
