Well not quite. Many of the midwives are nuns. It's an Anglican order and they all live at "Nonatus House". It's actually about life as a midwife in a working class area of London (?) in the 1950's. About human relationships and often about love and compassion. It's a lovely, gentle show and worth watching imo.
The show has Jenny Agutter, unforgettable for nude bathing scenes in "Walkabout" (1971) and as the toothsome female lead in "Logan's Run" (1976) Much latter she played a corrupt spy in the terrific BBC series 'Spooks', which ran from 2002 to 2011. It's one of very few series for which I have the box set
