The activists are working on “normalizing apostasy in Islam,” which is of course, “a monumental task.”
Quote:It is widely known that apostasy in Islam carries a death sentence or at least severe public and private censure. That is why a great number of ex-Muslims hide their disbelief from family, friends, and society. However, some noteworthy ex-Muslims have tried to address this phenomenon by proclaiming their apostasy and encouraging others to do the same.
Although rulings on apostasy vary according to interpretation or societal norms, just the fear of any kind of retribution is debilitating. Raif Badawi, Mishal Khan, Asia Bibi, and others accused of blasphemy have paid dearly with their lives and liberty in countries like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Maryam Namazie is a well-known human rights activist who is also co-founder of the Council of ex-Muslims of Britain. The organization is the British branch of a larger body of ex-Muslims called the Central Council of ex-Muslims.
The organization was formed with the express purpose of enabling other ex-Muslims to come forward. The manifesto states that “by the choice of members to openly publish their names and photographs, they act as representatives of many other apostates who fear coming out in public.” Judging by the traffic to websites such as Namazie’s, Sultan’s, or Apostate Prophet’s, it is evident that there is much soul-searching underway in the Islamic world.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
