The bottom line is..the Church is protecting the bottom line. They have shown they will do anything to prevent exposure that leads to them having to fork over millions upon millions of dollars in settlements in abuse cases.
The state is not nearly hard enough on the church and it upsets me a great deal. The Catholic Church isn't just like any local independent church. Each parish, each diocese is a tentacle of the Vatican, a sovereign state. They get their marching orders from this sovereign state and enforce them in every country they reside in, technically speaking in the eyes of the Church the Pope is ultimately in charge of all of the properties owned by various parishes and dioceses and has immediate authority over every priest and bishop in the Church. I think the Vatican ought to be held to account in many of these cases where rules laid down by the Vatican have resulted in abuse.
