For some reason, googling "Northies" took me to The Shire.

The whole situation is royally fucked up though, I agree. It seems unlikely to end well whatever happens.
That is also on the table, because Trump is in deep shit, he is facing hell lots of domestic anger, and it's a well known tactic -and a pretty cheap one too, but effective- to start a war out of nothing to distract the peoples' anger away from you.

I didn't believe it before, but rumors were so strong about the existence of two wings in the American White House: followers of the Military Industrial Complex vs The Oligarchs -fat cats-.
The mess means that it is real, the wings do exist, and both are beating the hell out of each other and that is what we're seeing now.

It'll be a token gesture just like the last 'response'. $100 million dollars worth of cruise missiles to pulverise an empty airfield. The west should have hammered the bastard years ago when there was a reasonable chance of taking him out but with Russia and now Iran stirring the pot; forget it.
I never bought the intentions of the alliance against Assad. It literally involves most nations in the world, the amount of airpower this alliance have is enough to defeat Hitler twice. Israel alone can halt Assad's airpower if not invade Syria.
What happened to the war on ISIS ? My guess is that the proxy is not quite needed now since the masks unfolded and the true fighting sides appeared.
Probably there is a new shape for the region, and the time for it to happen is now.
The alliance's forces -from Saudi Arabia to France to ...etc-, each one took a price for joining, just like the era of Sykes-Picot treaty
