Why would anyone assume that civilization began 6000 years ago, when we know there are cave paintings from 40,000 years ago and intentional human burials 100,000 years ago ?
Who says hunter/gatherers didn't have "civilization" ? There is evidence that human religion began a LOT earlier than 6,000 years ago.

Every religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble. - Joseph Campbell
