The NRA won't look a gift horse in the mouth. If we say one thing and do nothing they're gonna go nuts about it. This is an inconvenient bit of truth for both sides of the issue. The NRA needs to pretend that our gun laws actually get guns, but so do gun control advocates. They don't. No gun control legislation survives grandfathering. Everyone, even people with banned guns..get to keep their guns..and guns have a longer shelf life than gun control legislation has.
We'll have to change that, or just fundamentally change the way we approach gun control, otherwise, this back and forth is going to continue, and continue to provide leverage to both sides. It's not exactly coincidental that politicians maintain wedge issues. Fixing the problem would deprive them of the wedge and potentially cost them more than they have to spend.
Call me a cynic, but I think that factors into alot of decisions about gun control at the level of our reps, no matter who's making them. This cynical appraisal is reenforced by the fact that we have extremely clear data about how to address any given component of our gun problem but no one proposing anything that conforms to that data. We just don't take it seriously, and we probably never will. Gun control lost the very first time a bunch of kids got shot up and we did nothing. They're just numbers that we game each other over, now.
