I used to do it back in the day, but since I changed my view towards God I now think very seriously about my prayers, and either I should give them to others or not.
According to my belief, a prayer is not a spell, it's a real request to a real figure.
Now I view God as a unique, independent entity that has infinite intelligence, and has full knowledge of my current, past and future steps. Thus; I don't pray for somebody asking God to excuse them; they have their own channel of communication with God, they shouldn't need my "Shafa'ah/pleading for mercy". Also God already knows their past, present and future too.
I try to be as obvious as I can be: here on earth we can ask favors from each other, ask each other to let go of certain constraints, but when it comes to God, this mentality must evaporate. He is an absolute figure, or so Islam had taught me.
I'm glad Moses decided intercede with prayer for those filthy idolators at the base of Mt Sinai. If you're going to use your prayers like currency, remember God is loving and generous. And just like money, God doesn't really need them, they're for our sake.
@The Valkyrie - I can be used like that, especially in the South. That and "bless you". Intonation and context is important.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post
