They don't need to. A plausible (but by no means likely) scenario is that a Republican (ANY Republican) who isn't totally in love with Trump starts their own candidacy, probably promising things Trump on which Trump did not deliver, or promising a return to Republican normalcy. When the new candidate fails to get the nomination, s/he runs as an independent. Trump loonies will adhere to Trump, no question about it, but the disaffected Republican centrists, who would NEVER vote for the Democratic candidate, may swing to the new option. This may be enough to keep Trump from winning.
