If a person claimed that their god was a waffle, it would be perfectly appropriate to point out that it was a waffle, and not a god. That would be more like a totem or idol.
The trouble with your use of the analogy, above, is that god believers are not god professionals.
Which brings us back to the earlier point that theology is a subject with no content.
