The "caste" of Samurai became superfluous because of the unification under the Tokugawa shogunate in 1600 which meant: Total Military control directly in the hands of the Shogun, and no more (internal) wars. No more (independent) warlords and their (samurai) armies werent needed. The warrior caste (aka Samurai) had to transform slowly into a buerocracy. After the Meiji restoration they became completely irrelevant (not after giving a last resistance by doing an uprising), since the military power of the Shogun was taken away and transfered to the emperor himself.

Slghtly simplifiedd version, but should suffice for someone ignorant as you to do your homework and look up the details.

Not to mention a lot of Samurai were wiped out during hideyoshi toyotomi campaigns on the continent
