And yet, you will find lots of Muslims who do not interpret these verses the way you interpret them. For them, it's all about specific contexts (such as during wartimes) not absolute commands to slaughter people wherever you see them. I'll even bet there are some Muslims who will argue that these verses no longer apply (sort of like how many Christians deal with the slaughter verses in the Old Testament).
My point is, regardless of which interpretations are correct, it's more humane to make an effort to see Muslims as people just like any of us, and to not judge all Muslims as bad by what a relatively small portion of people who identify as Muslims do or even by what the book says. Do you best to minimize this tendency for tribalistic thinking, you'll be a better person for it.
