Just where does wealth end up if not the hands of predatory vendors in majority communities? They say they run their own business and made their own money? Great, new customers to cheat.
In fairness to that set...whatever they may say about their money and what they will and wont accept other people doing with it, how much they will or wont pay - they're some of the best marks around, in my experience. It's not just my experience, either - study after study after study has shown that under a specific set of circumstances, people will gladly surrender more of their cash than you might ask of them. This is usually leveraged to make novel business models work, or to increase revenue for existing models while decreasing the overhead of pricing exploration, and..ofc, for promotions...but it has applications for taxation and funding proposals as well. If a customer (our stand-in for a recalcitrant taxpayer) believes that they can set their own price, and if this is coupled with the notion that some portion of whatever they pay will go to their own pet issues, and so long as you can manipulate basic psychological pressures like reciprocity and our desire to be seen as givers rather than takers - a person who might refuse a product (or proposal) at the imposed price of 1.00 is very likely to believe that they have voluntarily agreed to prices (or funding) in the range of..say, 6.50. Substantially increasing revenue and also building positive perception of the product or service (or proposal).
I know, it flies in the face of our intuitions, and obviously it doesn't fit with their rhetoric, but it's true nevertheless. So, really, all we have to do is make selfish assholes feel better about themselves and they'll make it rain benjamins down on our heads even as they count their pennies elsewhere. It's worth keeping in mind, especially if the government never manages to get off it's ass and do something. There are private sector opportunities to effect the same outcomes.
