.450 Bushmaster is a civilian version of the special forces .450 Professional - a wildcat cartridge made for the AR-15 platform. It used a 230 grain .45 caliber bullet parked on a cut down .308 Nato casing- with the powder from .45 acp cartridges. A sure manstopper.
Bushmaster changed the parent cartridge to .284 Winchester - slightly larger than .308 and rarer than .308 - making it essentially a proprietary cartridge. (More expensive). They also went to a 250 grain bullet.
The upshot - it is the largest cartridge capable of being chambered in an AR-15. And - is considered a pistol cartridge - so legal in many limited hunting areas.
