You cant hit "The Diesel" low. Riggins was a running back you did not want to face. He basically looked at you as an object in his way and ran over you. As far as running backs in pro football are concerned, in the history of such positions, there were north and south runners, and dancers. One can argue strategy, for sure. But John Riggins didn't give a shit. If you were in front of him, he ran your ass over.
Don's mistake is that he slipped at the call when the ball was snapped. To his credit he popped up, and ran, his mistake was that he went too high in attempting to tackle Riggins, which allowed Riggins to shed the tackle.
If you want to stop a running game, the key is to know the blocking pattern on top of hitting low. Riggins run on that play was not only a coaching design, but a failure on a very basic level of tackling. I look at that play time after time and in any given game Don should have had him.
