This is something I didn't know yesterday.
Francois l'Olonnais, a French pirate, barely escaped with his life in 1667 while attempting to travel overland to sack San Pedro in Honduras. His force was ambushed and all but obliterated by the Spanish. l'Olonnais and a few confederates managed to escape into the jungle, where they captured a handful of Spaniards.
The pirate demanded to be shown a route to San Pedro that wasn't guarded by the Spanish. When his captives refused,
'He drew his cutlass, and with it cut open the breast of one of those poor Spanish, and pulling out his heart with his sacrilegious hands, began to bite and gnaw it with his teeth, like a ravenous wolf, saying to the rest: I will serve you all alike, if you show me not another way'.
