'The Hobbit' was first published in 1937 (and was a smashing success), but there was no German translation of the book until 1971. It seems that Tolkien was furious with Nazi authorities for demanding that he provide a detailed genealogy of himself to prove he had no 'Jewish blood'. The incident was so upsetting to him that he refused all offers of a German edition until near the end of his life.
