There are areas in northeastern France that are unfit for human, animal, and plant life as a result of the first world war. Known as 'Zone Rouge' ('Red Zone), the areas are saturated with unexploded shells, grenades and rusted munitions, as well as lethal levels of chlorine, mercury, lead, and arsenic. One area near Ypres has arsenic levels of more than 175 000 mg/kg (this is more than 13 000 times the lethal level for human exposure).
