Another interesting thing about the guitar: if you're playing an electric guitar, the tone of a specific guitar seems to only be down to a few variables:
So, basically, if I wanted the classic Rickenbacker tone, I could put a toaster pickup on any 24 3/4" scale guitar (Gibson and the like), and as long as I set the pickup in just the right place (Neck pickup betwen 17.83-19.14" and Bridge pickup between 22.52-23.92" if my analysis of pics of a Rickenbacker 360/12 is any indication) and at the right height (and maybe if I swapped out the volume pot for for something at either 250k or 330k, and I'm getting conflicting information here), I could get it. Granted, much of the Ric magic is in the 12-strings, which might be a bit harder to find, and, sadly, I don't expect Dhani Harrison to answer my emails about the pickup height on his Dad's old Ricky.
Dude managed to match his Tom Anderson Tele with the strings and electronics suspended between his work bench and an old shelf, which really says a lot about how much it works.
- Tuning
- Strings
- Scale Length
- Pickup model, height, position, and angle
- Effective volume pot value. (Maybe tone pot and cap value if you're into turning down the tone knob)
