I learned this some years ago at the big cat rescue outside of town. I have pictures somewhere of one of their tigers sitting in his water tank. The shot is behind him and shows his 'eye spots' on the back of his ears. Pretty cool.

Also learned to watch for signs...these big beasts can, and will, pee on you....from several feet away.
