I think anything over 45 yards would be like a 3 (4 pointer for football) pointer. Like hitting the bullseye from the planet Pluto. I think if you can split the uprights from beyond 45 yards(add 10 yards for end zone) of the NBA's 2 points, the NFL should have a 4 point range like the NBA has a 3 point range.
Comparing the point system of one sport to another is not really meaningful. The 3-point change drastically altered basketball. Making long field goals worth 4 points wouldn't likely make much difference in the long run. It's one point. It would affect a few close games a year at most; games where that single point would make a difference in the last minute.
Also, a 45 yard field goal in the NFL is pretty common. Actually the rate of 50 yard field goals is over 60%. But let's be clear about this, that's a 50 YARD field goal, which means the ball was placed at the 33 yard line. If you are talking about kicking from the 45 yard line, that means it would be a 57 yard field goal. But again, it might make a difference in a small number of games in which a 4 point score would either tie or win the game at the end, so teams might try that instead of a hail mary pass. Both would still be low percentage plays.
Why is it so?
