Lots of pink people, but white... no!
In winter in some places there seem to be an awful lot of beige people. Here in Oz, white skin is a sign one is very ill or dead.
More common is an unattractive shade of grey.
I guess the term 'white person' may have been a matter of comparison, especially when devising a them vs us dichotomy.
I can't help but wonder how long we have been using skin colour as a way of discriminating against people not like us. I suspect it may be a relatively recent thing. (last few centuries) I think in the past a person could be seen as inferior ('barbarian') with their skin colour being used only to describe their appearance.
I wonder if the growth in the enslavement of African people by Europeans had anything to do with it? That perhaps the perception changed from inferior-person-who-happens-to-be black to a more generic concept of all-black-people-are -inferior (?)
