Orbison has been a favourite since I was 17. That was the year I saw him in person (1964) Not what I'd call a riveting stage presence. In fact he looked quite unwell, but that voice! Imo easily the best voice in popular music of his generation.
His duet of Crying with k d lang still thrills me. Her solo cover is amazing.
Imo, the song which best illustrates his vocal range is 'The Crowd'. Be really interested to learn about any of his songs which you think do a better job of showing his range.
True dat on Roy Orbison's voice. The man sounds like a gospel organ.
The first time I heard him was the Travelling Wilburys volume 1. Well... I mean, I heard Pretty Woman on the radio before, duh. But the Wilburys album is when I spent time really listening to and appreciating his voice.
Odd as it may sounds to say of someone with an extraordinary voice, he really shines on backup vocals. Doing "ooohs" or "ahhhhs" in the background.... it really showcases the "gospel organ quality" of his voice.
