This religion has specific guidelines in all aspect of life unlike most mainstream religions. Such a guide will help you keep safe from debt, addiction and unhealthy lifestyle.
Here are some tangible examples:
1. Money must be backed by Gold/Silver. If this can't be done, then be backed by some hard commodity.
2. Financial transactions must share profits/loss. No interest/usury transactions what so ever. It is prohibited to devalue a nation's currency.
3. There is a certain way you are suppose to feed and slaughter cattle/chicken/lamb, ...etc. This approach helps keep the meat safe. Example, there are no instances of mad cow diseases in the Islamic nations. There is much less cancer rate in those countries compared to the west.
4. There is a certain way you are suppose to farm vegetables/fruits. Genetically modified food is against this religion.
5. Gives clear guidelines on alcohol ,drugs and gambling, to keep a follower from harming themselves and others.
... these are just some small examples.
In fact, these 5 guidelines is what the business world in the west hate the most.
They can't make big profits in debt-based finances, alcohol, gambling, drugs, casinos, GMO crops, ...etc. if you follow these 5 guidelines. This is why its demonized so much.
So basically you are saying a once bastion of Science, Civilisation and Free thinking is now so stupid and moronic that it needs these "rules and regulations"???

We're not neck-deep in heavy debt, we have a healthy liver, no destructive addiction problems what-so-ever, invested heavily in the commodity sector (hedging against a currency that is being devalued every millisecond),
essential we are at peace with ourselves, this lifestyle worked for us so far....
I would dispute your claim to "not being neck deep in debt" should the rest of the planet decide to go to 'alternative means of energy' your country would be beyond neck deep in debt inside a week. Be thankful 'the West is a bit on the lazy side of life'
