I'm surprised no one else has commented on this yet. We have humans on their way to the moon! Artemis 2 successfully accomplished their translunar injection burn several hours ago that sent them on their way. This is the first time in over 53 years that humans have left Earth orbit. The time gap is not unprecedented. It was over 80 years between the first landing at Antarctica and the establishments of a base there.

I understand that this is an atheist forum, not a space geek forum. Still, there has to be others here who feel like I do. I feel like this is a historical event that I'm grateful to have lived to see. I was 9-years-old the first time people orbited the moon in Apollo 8. Now we are finally going back to stay. I just wished it had happened before I was in my twilight years.

Everything seems to have started this Saturday morning (local time). Few is known yet all we know is that Israeli + US aircrafts are hitting Iran and Iran is probably trying to hit US bases in neighboring countries (but without any success yet if I am correct).

The US President Donald Trump promises amnesty to those who accept to lay down their weapons and adds:

Quote:““When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be, probably, your only chance for generations.
This might belong in The Arts but I thought News & Current Affairs was the best fit. No heartache from me if mods/admins move it as they see fit.

Actor Timothy Busfield who is probably best known for playing Poindexter on the first two Revenge of the Nerds movies has been accused of sexually molesting a child.

Yuck!

I don't want to believe this because although I would hardly rate Busfield as a hero, he was integral to a pair of movies I believe effected positive cultural change, making nerds more respectable. While we all know the actors who play beloved characters can be real-life scumbags, it always stings to find out.

The prominent linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky called it a “most valuable experience” to have maintained “regular contact” with Jeffrey Epstein, who by then had long been convicted of soliciting prostitution from a minor, according to emails released earlier in November by US lawmakers.

Chomsky, 96, had also reportedly acknowledged receiving about $270,000 from an account linked to Epstein while sorting the disbursement of common funds relating to the first of his two marriages, though the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor has insisted not “one penny” came directly from the infamous financier.

The emails disclosed on 12 November by the Republican members of the US House oversight committee generally detailed the correspondence Epstein had with political, academic and business luminaries, including the Bill Clinton White House’s treasury secretary Larry Summers and Steve Bannon, the longtime ally of Donald Trump. Further, they reveal Epstein and Chomsky were close enough to discuss musical interests and even potential vacations.

Perhaps the most telling of the Chomsky-related documents in question was a letter of support for Epstein attributed to Chomsky with the salutation “to whom it may concern”. It is not dated, but it contains a typed signature with Chomsky’s name and citing his position as a University of Arizona laureate professor, a role he began in 2017, as first reported by the Massachusetts news outlet WBUR.

Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 in Florida to state charges of solicitation of prostitution and solicitation of prostitution with a minor. He served 13 months of an 18-month sentence and was released in July 2009.

“I met Jeffrey Epstein half a dozen years ago,” read the letter of support from Chomsky that was reviewed by the Guardian after its Republican House oversight committee release. “We have been in regular contact since, with many long and often in-depth discussions about a very wide range of topics, including our own specialties and professional work, but a host of others where we have shared interests. It has been a most valuable experience for me.”

It is unclear whether Chomsky sent the letter to anyone. Nonetheless, it exalts Epstein for teaching Chomsky “about the intricacies of the global financial system” in a way “the business press and professional journals” had not been able to do. It boasted about how well connected Epstein was.

Epstein had – “with limited success” – aided efforts from Chomsky’s second wife, Valeria, to introduce him “to the world of jazz and its wonders”, the letter continued.

It concluded, “The impact of Jeffrey’s limitless curiosity, extensive knowledge, penetrating insights and thoughtful appraisals is only heightened by his easy informality, without a trace of pretentiousness. He quickly became a highly valued friend and regular source of intellectual exchange and stimulation.”

Another notable communication involving Chomsky and Epstein is a 2015 email in which the latter offers the former use of his residences in New York and New Mexico.

States seceding from the Union has become a popular talking point in recent years. Republicans speak of a "National Divorce" in which the red states secede and become Republican rule. It has been noted that blue states are net positive in that they pay in more to the federal government than they receive in services from the federal government, whereas red states are often net negative. The idea of a soft secession in which the blue states simply stop paying to the federal government, since they have the money to replace the services provided by the federal government. Pakman talks about some of the complications, but what do you think? Is this doable? If it's doable, is it advisable?

This was supposed to be a short answer in the “Noteworthy News” Thread. But I decided to post this as a new thread because these mass shootings seem to have become a regular thing in the news since the Columbine Shooting in Colorado in 1999.

Here is a short article about this awful incident:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/minn...54656.html

This one was a transgender man / woman or whatever. Almost all of these shooters have serious mental issues and their last victims are usually themselves.

See: Even a knife can be a super-efficient killing tools. This is why stiletto type automatic knives is (or used to be) illegal in most countries.

Fire arms are devices that were engineered through centuries to kill humans (and animals) as quickly and as efficiently as possible. So there are many macho types on this side of the Atlantic too who don’t have a lot, but are still willing to make the investment into that type of killing machines.

But there are laws in place. The government has the right to ask “What are you planning to do with that type of killing machine? What is your motive? Why do you think you need it? Won’t you consider investing on a new alarm system or in a German shepherd dog instead of it? How about an electroshock device? Pepper gas spray? Subscription to the local Krav - Maga School?”

The options are so many.

The second amendment is (in today’s terms) the right to take arms against someone like D. Trump if he succeeds in his endeavors and starts ruling the whole country without having to answer to anyone for any of his decisions.

So there is a huge misunderstanding here. As I said, where I live, you can end in police custody for having a knife. And not everyone gets to see my knives. We used to own fire guns but ended up selling them. (I mean there are cops + Gendarmerie + armed forces in this country, who needs that type of “investment” if you no longer actively need it right?)

One of the most important lesson I learned in Middle School was that problem (mathematical or real life problems) all have a solution. You just need to look more carefully and find the solution because it is always there.

Antonio Guterres is actually speaking in a tone that is similar to his tone on climates change (and similar to his tone during the COVID crisis). I don’t know if it is ok to simply ignore UN institutions and UN warning on the issues of this world.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/un-c...30130.html

Something very serious is currently happening in Gaza (and the whole Muslim world if you look at it).

1) As even most African countries are gradually moving toward more sustainable political and economic models and trying to progress toward a more modern lifestyle, the Muslim world is doing the opposite. After the decolonization of the 1960’s they chose authoritarian governments. Now these governments have all collapsed (except in Egypt and perhaps Pakistan). And now they seem to be moving to more “Islamic” ways of doing things. Which is also complete BS. You can’t solve real problems (like women being uneducated, unemployed and forcefully married at the age of 15 and bearing a new baby every year or so for the rest of their lives) with a spiritual toolbox. You need rational approaches backed by reason and science. When is the Arab world going to understand that?

2) Why doesn’t Israel simply remove all of these populations and take whatever it wants to take and end this once and for all?

- You know: I believe that when you are intellectually or culturally more advanced, I think you have some moral obligation toward less intellectually advanced people who (in most cases) understand far less then you do.

So I don’t think Israel can simply stay in Gaza killing a few dozen people every single day and make us all watch these atrocities.

I am also tired of this “Promised land” idea. My only vision is that it is OK for each ethnic group on this world to have a piece of land they can call “my own”. But I don’t think that, having just said that, I have brought my self in a problem that is impossible to solve. Netanyahu like people are the ones claiming “that there is no solution” so that they can keep doing what they are doing.
So I don’t know. What’s your approach on this?

Transwomen athletes so far have been a hit and miss

Despite all the doom and gloom from the right, and the sensationalist headlines, we still to this point have not seen transgendered athletes crushing the competition. We have seen a handful over the years win in some of these sports, but nothing to suggest any incredibly unfair advantage over their cisgendered counterparts. They win sometimes and lose more times, and they aren't generally winning championships or breaking records. You'd think that if the advantages they enjoy are so unfair, they'd win almost every single time and smash records repeatedly.

Let's consider the example of AB Hernandez, that transgendered female athlete who won two high school state events this year in track and field. Great, she took home two golds in one day which is an impressive feat in and of itself, but is it that impressive that she shouldn't have been allowed to participate in high school girls' sports? Let's dig into the details just a little bit to find out.

There were three events she participated in the California high school track and field championships (May 2025): high jump, long jump, and triple jump.

She got second place in long jump, losing to a cisgendered girl. Hmmm, ok, maybe she didn't train properly for that, so let's let it slide.

For high jump and triple jump, she got first place. But hold on, she didn't break any records in either of these two events. In fact, a good number of cisgendered girls in past years have done better than her in these competitions. See, for example, Tara Davis-Woodhall 2017 record for triple jump clearly surpassing AB's personal record (as a bonus, see her personal record for long jump also).

And one of the girls AB competed with in high jump in this competition did better in a previous competition earlier this year. Both AB Hernandez and Jillene Wetteland managed to clear a height of 5 feet, 7 inches but Jillene also cleared a height of 5 feet, 10 inches in an earlier competition.

So the takeaway here is: details fucking matter. If heaps of cisgendered girls have done better than her, changes are high she is not enjoying an unfair advantage over cisgendered girls.

See AB's 2025 record for triple jump here (and Jillene's record for high jump):

And compare to Tara's 2017 record for triple jump here:
https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/S...tate=80281

Iran has warned that the United States should expect 'heavy consequences' for striking its nuclear sites, issuing a threat that its entry into the conflict with Israel will 'expand the scope of legitimate targets'.

'Mr. Trump, the gambler, you may start this war, but we will be the ones to end it,' Iran's military command spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaqari said in a recorded statement today.
'Why wouldn't there be a regime change,' Trump went on to question - even though he and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer had earlier urged Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei to 'return to the negotiating table as soon as possible.'
The 'bunker buster' raid from Trump stunned the world and led the United Nations to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday afternoon, where officials said the US crippled Iran's crucial enrichment sites.
