What the bible says Hell is like

And of course, Muslims think everyone who is not Muslim is going to Hell too, so that includes me. I don't care at all about the Muslims thinking this, but when other Christians think it, it does upset me, because I feel as Christians we should be united for Christ... not fighting against each other over petty differences. Either way, it's just simplistic to think that God is so limited that everyone who is not of a religion goes to Hell, even if they live a life of virtue and self giving love. God is so much greater than to just discount people for not being of X religion, imho. It's whats in the heart that matters most.

^With that being said though, I'm 99.9% sure this particular person is a poe lol. And I'm starting to kind of enjoy it.  Big Grin

I think I read Poe's Law differently than most of y'all.

To me it simply says that religious crazies are so crazy that you can't tell if they're insane or faking it.

You guys seem to be using it as, "well then they must be faking it", equating a Poe to a Troll. They are different things, to me.

Because I come from a religious-insanity version of Christianity, in my past, and myself would have said all the things these Poes say, I use "Poe" to describe someone as "what you say is so crazy that I doubt a faker could pull it off, but if you are a faker, you're amazing at it".

Much of their language is highly specific to evangelical circles, a sort of secret language like a shibboleth,  by which members of the "in-group" can recognize one another. Such phrases as, for instance, "on fire for the Lord", and "born again" are specific to certain denominations, even though of course the phrase "born again" is in the Bible. It's a matter of what secret bits of esoteric language are chosen for employment within that culture, and so it's very hard for a faker to Poe in a way that's consistent unless he comes recently from a background of evangelical radicalism, and it strikes me as unlikely that such a person would think to themselves, "Well, I'm not a Christian now, so let's go torment some atheists!"

On the other hand, bored teenagers or fired-up Christian college students who are actually Christians might think that they can "score points for Jesus" simply by baiting us, and might pretend to be more evangelicrazy than they are, simply to "drive" us. To me, that's a troll, someone who's just here to harass, not to discuss. And trolls are rightly banned.
A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

When I say he's a Poe I mean he's an atheist who is pretending to be a super fundamentalist Christian and saying crazy stuff for a little fun lol. That's what I think this guy is, but I suppose you could be right as well.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I can see where you would think that, but I doubt atheists would target an atheism site for harassment, not even in an attempt to make Christians look crazy. There's no need to make Christians look crazy, since so many Christians are willing to step up and do it on their own.

(I do not mean to imply that I think if you're a Christian you're a crazy! Just that there are plenty of nuts in that jar, same as in our jar.)

Like these:

But I want you to know that I don't think that's all of you. As Ricky Gervais (a favorite public atheist of mine) put it:

A Poe is a person who is so crazy that you can't tell if they're a crazy person or just pretending. In this case, we can't tell if he's a Christian nutter (because they certainly do exist) or someone pretending just for fun or for artistic purposes as Violet calls it Heart

PiusPaladin (or whatever the name was) was an atheist from this forum who created this fake sock account of a traditionalist SSPX Catholic a few months ago because she was bored. It's just supposed to be satire. It was actually pretty freaking hilarious though lol.

I thought a poe definitely was someone who was just pretending for the purpose of satire.

It was Deistpaladin on April fools, and he is - or was last I checked - a deist not an atheist.

He said kudos to the first one who guessed it was him and I guessed saying it was him in a PM... I recognized his particular typing habits and idiosyncrasies. I can't remember what it was but he said some catchphrase that only Deistpaladin ever says. He was a great debater and I was a fan.

Anyway, it was for April fools and was a one off thing done by the staff. And he's a he.

Unless there's Piuspaladin as well? It was more than a few months back I thought too!

Poe's Law "
“”Without a clear indication of the author's intent, it is difficult or impossible to tell the difference between an expression of sincere extremism and a parody of extremism."

Thanks! I guess I was misunderstanding it this whole time!
