4.54 billion years (+/- 45.4 million years)

Radiometric dating done on rocks, the oldest rocks found on earth date 4.4 billion years and metorites have been dated to around 4.6 billion years.

For as long as I can remember I believed the earth was old and accepted the scientific evidence for the age when it was presented to me in a school textbook. Radiometric dating is a very tried and tested method if you want to how old something is, as long as you use the right method for the material. For instance Uranium-lead dating method is useless when you want to date recent eurpted lava, because of the margin or error which is like 2 million years.
