His papal account
The pope is a false idol if ever I saw one. Screw him for siding with that stupid woman.
I don't think we know that he sided with her, only that he met with her. Which isn't particularly surprising; Catholics looooove the concept of "suffering for Jesus". Like, even my real-life Catholic friends will make jokes about how much they all idealize the concept of "God sends us suffering to make us better Catholics" to the point that it gets semi-rapturous.
That's the point of my "An atheist goes to hell and sees everyone having a good time except the Catholics, who insisted on a lake of fire being constructed for them" joke, from the jokes thread.
So it's hardly surprising he'd want to come talk to a person who claims to be persecuted-for-Jayzus. What concerns me is a question of what his motivation would be for doing so-- did he just want to ask her, himself, what her motives were? Did he want to encourage other Catholics to "make a stand for Jayzus" in resisting distribution of birth control from pharmacies, et cetera? (Seems to defeat the point, if that is the Pope's motivation, since the Vatican kept the meeting secret, originally, and Davis is the one who leaked the info, to self-aggrandize.) My guess is that Davis is the closest thing we have to an actual "Christianity event" going on in the northern hemisphere right now, so the guy was curious to talk with a semi-celeb.
I never thought about the Papacy as being essentially PR for the Holy See, but that's really what it boils down to.... interesting point, Kevin.
A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost
I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.
