You realize he's talking about himself? You realize the entire song title and chorus "The river runs deep" is a metaphor for life itself, the actions we take, having a large effect down the road, that's why he's takes two people with the same opportunities, one who stopped drugs, one who didn't. That decision may seem small in the moment, but the great storytelling is that he tells how the ensuing actions because of that one choice ended up giving them entirely different results. Then at the end he says "Story of my life cause both of them were me, thinkin to myself yo who i wanna be", meaning he was faced with the same choice, and when you look at what the second person did because he quit drugs, became a rapper, record deals, you realize this is him.
