That really depends on how one is defining stupidity. It's more like bullshitting is not a handicap in politics. But you still have to be smart enough to bullshit so effectively.
I could say that any public display of ignorance, or bigotry such as racism is for media attention and serves a deeper plan. Sure I could think all the uproar and controversy over questionable remarks are just a pawn in one person's mastermind scheme to trick us in to thinking he's stupid for personal gain. Or, I could come back to reality, and realize most probably hes just that dumb.
