The verse quoted about the heavens and earth has nothing to do with physical universe, but everything to do with the metaphysical world and the reality of the souls and what they are linked to.
One thing that makes this obvious it is stating to disbelievers at that time, that don't they see this, while it cannot be expected they have knowledge of the big bang nor would that refute their ideology as they believed in a Creator but equated him with that which has no comparison to him.
It's teaching something about the light. There other verses saying everything living is created from water and other verses saying his throne was upon water. This again is referring to a spiritual reality that can be witnessed.
