I truly think it's sexual repression. A lot of those real hardcore homophobes are probably latent homosexuals.
I had a buddy in high school who we were all pretty sure was bisexual. He was legitimately the most attractive guy in our school and always had girls around him or with him. He was the guy that every girl wanted to be with and every other guy wanted to be. But he definitely made some certainly... questionable, to say the least... comments and things and we were all pretty sure he was in the closet. He was also, at times, extremely homophobic it was very bizarre. He wasn't religious though but I'm just saying it seems like a lot of the time the most homophobic people are just really in the closet gay people.
Interestingly enough my group of friends in high school would have been completely accepting of him if he was gay (even though we were all a bunch of little hoodlums, druggies and criminals we weren't close-minded
) but he for whatever reason never wanted to admit to it or come out of the closet. To each their own I guess.
