Cherry picking to fit the data goes on all the time. I'll do it at the drop of a hat...and I have to discipline myself to the English language. This is where most religions can't read.
I put a lot of effort into finding out what the difficult passages mean as well. Of course that doesn't guarantee that I am out of the dark.
There's the possibility that I have a weird slant on the whole Bible, but as with all life learning, there is an element of trust too, that I'm dong my best.
Judging the Bible by its own claims will include comparisons within the natural sciences of the world, genuine history etc. This is where there is a massive conflict with what people believe.
And these areas are open for rewriting and defining - over and over again. Part of that process is considered to be in the scientific method.
