I can easily see that a pencil is bent if I stick the end in some water, that doesn't mean it's actually bent. Even if the appearance of design were compelling, it's not in and of itself sufficient argument that it is designed. This argument might stall a good number of atheists, but for those whom it doesn't, it will simply show you up to be the idiot in the room. Most atheists will likely jump to that conclusion from your simply making the argument in the way you do. That may indeed silence the atheist, but not in a good way. Having your opponent conclude you are a useless idiot and your beliefs stupid is not how you want to end discussion.

What? I don't even understand your point here. If other atheists like me then this will indeed likely end discussion with them looking at you with confused stares. If this is a reference to the anxiety some people feel when faced with their own mortality, that's hardly a specifically atheist problem. I don't know offhand how many atheists are actually troubled by their mortality, but I suspect it's less than you think. Regardless, this is not likely to shut up an atheist as they are likely to turn the conversation back upon you and ask you to give evidence that you are not similarly limited.

Actually, this is another topic which is likely to spur the atheist into action rather than silence them. On the other hand, it does pretty much tie the theist's hands as he is inevitably reduced to repeating, "Hurr durr, God!"

What on earth makes you think that chimpanzees lack consciousness? You're getting funnier and funnier by the minute. You, personally, will silence most atheists with any argument as they will conclude that you are a hopeless crackpot and simply move on. Not to mention that you're undermining your own point by implying that growing brains had something to do with consciousness. Remember. The correct response is, "Hurr durr, God!"
