It would have worked if the Conservatives had not undermined it
There could have been a registry, yes, if you were willing to put tens of thousands of rural people in jail for not registering their guns.
But, what was the main purpose? Gang violence in cities isn't done with someone's old .22 rifle. The state purpose was so that law enforcement, before responding to warrants or domestic calls, would know if they were dealing with a gun owner.
That was literally the best use-case they could come up with. So, if you are a gun owner, I guess they come in with guns drawn. So much for equal protection under the law.
You can actually check to see what the next biggest cohort in trace data is going to be by checking the production numbers from seven years ago. Our gun problem is not as bad as it's going to get, just yet. There was a massive spike peaking just around that mark. Large caliber concealable pistols accounted for the biggest handgun portion of the spike. They're going to completely replace revolvers in trace data (that's actually been happening for years). Sport rifles were the other thing. AR and AR clones.
It's a long standing and well demonstrated relationship. Started tracking it in 1986, iirc. In sum, gun crime is a function of the availability of suitable weapons at a price that the prospective gun crimer can afford. Hence, now-old guns from a production glut of concealables and semi auto rifles are entering crime for the first time...at present... in any large number. Also just so happens to coincide with the rise of domestic terrorism, this go round.
It may be a good time to invest in a company that makes unobtrusive and stylish tactical vests.
