I don't see the point in talking about the old days when children could just bring guns to school and buy them with no need to do anything but pony up. Regardless of what schoolkids could have done 95 years ago, we don't live in that world anymore. What is your solution here? Make society regress into a delusion where it's 1927 forever and we don't live in a world where kids are acutely aware that you can just achieve a level of notoriety by shooting up their one-room schoolhouses? Or is it just to claim that, because there was a time when it wasn't necessary, that there's no way it can be necessary now? Like the time I, as a seventh-grader, was sent to a second-grade classroom and told to sit in the tiny desks, and when I pointed out that I can't fit in the fucking thing, they said I used to sit in there every day, like the last six years where I grew a foot taller and doubled my weight meant fuck-all.
And I would also point out that if you turned the clock back about 15 more years, that same child (or maybe their aunts or uncles) could buy heroin with the same non-existent level of oversight with which they could buy a tommy gun in 1927. And even as someone whose views on drugs lean towards "legalize everything," that still strikes me as fucking insane.
