Is self-interest just a cover-up term for emotions? It seems to be so. How does evolution give justification for what is and isn't destructive behavior?
Your perceived contradictions seem to be a lack of knowledge of what natural selection is. We are an animal. A clever one granted. As animals our actions effect all species we interact with in some way.
We can consciously change the future of a species but I don't see any contradiction of natural selection. The process has just changed because the intelligence of humans.
