Of course you do.

Does anyone have an explanation that is non-contradictory???

Yes, I want to preserve them because they're tasty.

Next question?

This I agree with.

Quote:Most of the time, however, it is not evolution in action, but a direct result of humanity's detrimental effect on the planet, so it then becomes our duty to try to stop the extinction from happening.

It can reasonably be argued that humanity's detrimental impact on our planet is evolutionary process in action. All species impact thier environment, some to a (much) greater degree than others - humans of course being the most successful at making a mess of things. I don't see how that makes our actions unnatural or somehow separate from evolution.

Species go extinct due to inadequate defense from predation, inability to adapt to changing habitat, and so forth. We're just the most disruptive species on the planet (by far, obviously).

None of this is to say that I disagree with your conclusion - that we should attempt to save endangered species. It's not necessarily out of a sense of duty or altruism (though those are factors), in some cases, it's out of self-interest. On the topic of self-interest, failure to modify our destructive behavior will, sooner or later, lead to disastrous consequences for ourselves.

Lots of contradictions here:
How does "natural selection" give us a duty to save endangered species?
Is self-interest just a cover-up term for emotions? It seems to be so. How does evolution give justification for what is and isn't destructive behavior?
James Holmes acted consistent with what evolution teaches. He evolved from an animal, and when he murdered those people, He acted like one. You can't say he's wrong since evolution made him that way.

Have you considered that as we have evolved by means of natural selection we have become powerful enough to shape it too?

Because by saving species, we do.

No contradiction. We can control the future of certain animals. Humans are the product of nature. Natural selection.

Cows 'succeed' because we found them useful so we breed them.

We can change the future of a species through our actions.

Wow! Go tell that to all hunters/poachers and all species that prey on others. You've got a lot of competition! Seems like evolution is against you LOL!

I give up. You have no idea what you are talking about and I don't have the time or the inclination to explain to you how the Big Bang, or evolution through natural selection actually works. Do some research and learn something, rather than spewing a bunch of ignorance around in public. I'm embarrassed for you.

Your perceived contradictions seem to be a lack of knowledge of what natural selection is. We are an animal. A clever one granted. As animals our actions effect all species we interact with in some way.

We can consciously change the future of a species but I don't see any contradiction of natural selection. The process has just changed because the intelligence of humans.

This one is just fucking about. Not worth the effort. I'm putting him on ignore.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

Really? You have no idea what you are talking about and I consider you incapable of making a genuine point about any contradiction. Shame on whoever educated you.

Lots of love.

I didn't make that claim. I did make the claim that in some cases, it is in our self-interest to do so (e.g. if the food chain collapses, it puts our future in jeopardy).

Quote:Is self-interest just a cover-up term for emotions? It seems to be so.

No, self-interest is self-interest, in terms of our potential for future survivability of our species.

Quote:How does evolution give justification for what is and isn't destructive behavior?

It doesn't claim to.

Surely, of all people, christians should be able to understand that beliefs and actions can contradict each-other, what with the catholic priests and all.

Evolution, put simply, is about "survival of the fittest". This summation of evolution is exactly that, a summary. It is what happens when nature is left to it's own devices. Humans interfering with this in no way contradicts evolution, which is scientific fact and won't stop being so because of us keeping a few species alive.

In the case of cows, they are useful to us, so we breed them, thus making them fit for their environment, so the species remains.

I think not.
