i've been there man. the house i'm working on now, same thing. edges so worn back and cheap fascia boards left the birds in love. when i walked into the attic, i was divebombed by birds for a half hour. that was their attic at that point. hahaha.
hey man, that sounds like shotty work at it's best ... a proper 2x fascia (not a 1x6 that will warp and wear away quickly) and a drip edge properly run under the paper would help avoid that. well, the good part is that bad workmanship is known as job security for those of us in the know.
