I was influenced by Tiberius' recent post where he said an abstention was also an assertion of non belief. You're not in the fence, you simply don't believe. If you knew nothing of the choice, you still wouldn't believe.
I don't think that harms the position of non belief at all. I think it's better than saying "I believe God doesn't exist". That then suggests that you have something to defend. It begs the question asking to explain the justification for it. Maybe that's semantics and both statements could be challenged. And answered by the retort: I find no reason to believe.
